What is Kombucha?

I see a lot more people drinking these with their meals and many others questioning if these are worth the $3-$5 each ( unless you’re a sale crazed person like me and try to get everything organic on sale and with a coupon, you’ll be paying less). I’m here to tell you the answer to that question is Yes and No. It’s completely up to you.

The reason why I’ll grab a kombucha and chug away is because I love the taste. It’s 100 times better than picking up a soda, but with the same sensation. However, I would recommend water over this any day, but not everyone wants to drink water all day everyday.

WHAT IS KOMBUCHA?

- Well, my dear friends, kombucha is a fermented tea. The mushroom converts the sugar and tea into enzymes, acids, and vitamins. The drink is filled with live yeast and bacteria.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF KOMBUCHA?

If I didn’t scare you away yet, you must be thinking who in the world would want to put bacteria in their body, when we try and rid of bacteria everyday? Well, I have a pretty simple answer for you. Our bodies have GOOD and BAD bacteria. Yes we want our bodies to rid the bad bacteria, but we NEED our bodies to produce enough good bacteria. Which is why many of us take a probiotic supplement. The good bacteria helps us with digestion and fighting away the bad bacteria. So, fermented food and drinks ( sauerkraut, yogurt, sourdough bread and kombucha) can help with Boosting your immune system, contains many vitamins, helps with boosting your energy, increases metabolism and helps with PMS ( hello ladies).

SHOULD I DRINK KOMBUCHA?

Completely up to you. You can take a probiotic and an enzyme supplement and receive the same benefits, actually better benefits since its more consistent and long term. Or you can drink this in place of a soda to get that same, but natural, fizz feeling and taste with all the added vitamins and benefits.

I have found to love a few different brands. Do your research and taste test.

BLUEBERRY GRAPE SMOOTHIE

Who doesn’t love a delicious raw vegan smoothie? I love smoothies they’re quick, convenient and filling.

Now that grapes are back on the market, i’m buying tons. Organic grapes are pretty expensive, but so worth it. I eat them plain, frozen, on a salad, and even in my smoothies. I buy when I can, but when I do they’re gone in a couple of days (so good).

Try this smoothie out and tell me what you think

YOU WILL NEED: 

* 1 cup of blueberries 

* As many grapes you’d like to use, but I used about 1 cup

spoonful of spirulina 

2 bananas 

water and ice

blend 

Don’t forget, you use frozen fruits in place of ice and Almond milk instead of water ( but I prefer water for this one)

Organic Green Bowl

Hey everyone! Welcome back to my site. Can you believe spring is already here? Wow time just flies by. One of my favorite things about spring is all the many vegetables and fruits it brings. I love waking up early, opening all of my windows to let the warm breeze in, as well as the sound of all the cute little birds chirping  away, and mix up something scrumptious to eat to start my day.

I absolutely love smoothies, for one, they taste amazing! For two, they have so many delicious fruits and veggies, and for three they’re super easy to make.

Because of my love for smoothies, I fell in love with what I like to call The Green bowl. It’s Like a smoothie, in taste and health benefits, but a bit different to eat. I somewhat replicated a “mana bowl” I found in Hawaii, but of course made it my own. The mana bowl was my inspiration so thank you Hawaii for that.

 

It has (Everything Organic):

kale – vitamin A , k and C. Calcium, anti inflammatory, high in fiber.

spinach-  magnesium, vitamin k , fiber, phosphorus and thiamine

chard- carotenoids (great for anti against), vitamin a,

mint- is great for digestion and stomach cramps because of all the antioxidants and phytonutrients . Great anti inflammatory and great for cleansing the skin.

peaches- vitamin a and c (keeps skin healthy), helps keep stress levels low and is a great cleanser of the bladder

Ginger – one of my all time favorites! Eat this every day and you’ll see and fell all of the amazing properties it carries. Great for digestion, nausea, anti inflammatory, aids in preventing cancer, it’s just filled with lots of love for the body. You don’t need a lot either just a small slice a day is fine .

Spirulina- has a high amount of phycocyanin and chlorophyll. also contains beta-carotene ( which protects out cells)

you blend it all with a bit of water and a lot of Ice (The ice makes the consistency thick)

I then like to top it with chopped banana and gluten free granola … Yum!

You Scream, I Scream , we all Scream for Ice Cream!

I love Ice Cream. I love Vanilla, Chocolate, Pistachio, Coconut, the list can go on forever. The only problem is, I can’t have Dairy. Yep, it’s an allergy. Thanks stomach, just thanks. Some people I know just take a Lactose pill and get down on a bucket of Ice Cream, Yes I did just write a BUCKET. If you’re going to take a pill might as well go all out, right?

Heres the thing, I’m not interested in taking those little suckers. I’d rather eat, guilt-free and more importantly pain free so I decided to try and make my own Ice-”cream.” It actually came out really yummy. It’s really easy and I had an empty container so I put the rest in the freezer. More for later!

Here is what I did, and feel free to add different fruits and experiment yourself.

I used:

3 frozen Organic bananas

1/2 cup of Organic Unsweetened Almond milk ( try Vanilla for a sweeter taste)

Spoonful of Raw Honey ( if you’re vegan, try stevia )

Few cubes of Ice

and then I hit “Ice Cream” on my Blendtec ( Best Blender ever by the way)

It actually came out with a creamy texture but was running out of my house so had to go in the freezer which is why it looks a little more hard in my picture.

Anyways, I added organic Blueberries and sprinkled some cinnamon and there you have Dairy Free Ice cream in maybe 3 minutes.

The Gluten Free Bar

T H E  - G L U T E N F R E E –  B A R

Now a days seems like Everyone is Gluten -Free. Whether you’re doing it for health reasons, you’re allergic, or you just simply want to try it out. You are in luck because they’re are so many Gluten Free products on the market. Some loaded with extra sugar and Fat to make up for the non existent gluten, and some made for the health conscious. You are going to find many different bars on the market, but in the mean time we will start with this one right here.

So I was given this bar to try out and I’d first like to comment on the taste and texture. It tastes like your average protein bar, but after chewing it a bit you can taste the oatmeal and raisin more. I love that it’s made with organic ingredients and that it is Vegan, Dairy- Free, 12 grams of protein and has Flax seed. Since I love Flax seed, that is a huge plus.

There are only two things that I have to say I’m not completely happy about… It contains soy ( because I’m not supposed to have soy) and it uses Organic Agave Nectar and I simply am not a fan of Agave. I prefer raw Honey or maybe a bit of stevia.

Over- all, its a good bar. One thumb up. Its filling, satisfying and pretty clean. They do expire a bit quicker than a lot of health bars out there, but always remember the quicker food expires the better it is for you. So eat up!

 

Kids Fiber Complete… Multi + Omega 3 + Vitamin D

Seems like these days it’s harder to get the appropriate vitamins inside of children’s bellies. Eating Vegetables? YUCK. Eating Fruit? So much sugar. Eating anything other than the standard PB&J ? Nope. Children are smart little human beings and they know what tastes good and what doesn’t. If all of this sounds familiar and you’re desperately trying to make sure your children grow up as healthy as possible, you are in luck! There are plenty of vitamins on the market that are disguised as candy. YUMMMM ( we all know I love sugar). That’s the good news, ready for the bad? Just like anything, they are all made differently with different quality and some with even harmful ingredients. So I am here to review some of these. Ill give you my honest opinion and I hope I can help. I know when I’m browsing the halls of my local Whole Foods or Nutrition store i’m hoping ill find someone who has personally tried a product I am looking for. . . P.S I have a degree in Psychology with an emphasis in Child Development, I’ve also had the privilege to work with children with mental, emotional and physical problems. Heck, I’m a kid at heart and I definitely have the taste buds as one since I’m obsessed with, yep you guessed it, sugar! Though I don’t have children yet of my own, I’ve been around them enough to know a bit of what they enjoy and what they don’t.

So these little gummies actually taste really yummy. I could eat these all day, but I can’t, so I sadly won’t. They’re for your children 3 and older. I love that they are Gluten Free with No added Sugar. They are a multivitamin and contain your Omega 3′s, Vitamin D and Fiber. They also Don’t contain any High Fructose Corn Syrup, artificial Colors, flavors or preservatives. They are made in the USA ( california to be exact).

What I don’t like about these gummies is that they contain Gelatin. I am not a huge fan of Gelatin and if you or your little one(s) prefer a vegan life-style these are not for you.

Contains:

Vitamin A,C,D,E,B6,B12, Iodine, Zinc, Folic Acid, Pantothenic acid ( as D calcium) , Thiamin, and Fish oils.

Overall I think it’s a pretty good vitamin. It also tastes just like candy so your kids should eat them right up. Another good thing about this company is that for every Smarty Pants product you purchase they make a 1-1 matching nutrient grant to a child in need.

Paradise Juice Cleanse

What do you think of when you think of Pineapple? As for me, I think of a secluded little island  laying on the sand, with a Virgin Piña Colada in my hand singing ” If you like Piña coladas getting caught in the rain…” Ok, I don’t envision getting caught in the rain as paradise, but I think you can catch my drift. Which is why I call one of my favorite juices, Paradise. It’s sweet, simple, reminds me of a sunny day, beneficial and basically happiness in a glass. Which is exactly what Paradise, I think, Should be.

Ingredients:

Okay this juice is completely based on what you like and can handle. I can handle a ton of ginger, but others can’t. Be warned that the more ginger the more it may burn going down your throat. BUT, and there is a HUGE but, remember ginger is extremely beneficial.

Though you don’t want to take more than 4-5 grams a day, if you drink a ton one day but the next you avoid it you will be fine.

I generally like to fill my glass 1/3 with pineapple, 1/3 with cucumber and 1/3 with ginger But if you must do Half cucumber, half pineapple and a bit of ginger then do whatever feels right! Remember to use O R G A N I C ingredients =)

Benefits: 

1. Pineapple – Pineapples carry a ton of ferulic-acid which basically is a plant chemical that aids in the prevention of cancer-causing substances. They also contain Bromelain which is an enzyme that is an anti-inflammatory. Contains large amount of Vitamin C and also has Manganese which aids in the metabolism of Fats, protein and cholesterol.

2. Cucumber – helps with weight loss, an entire cucumber probably has less than 15 calories. contains vitamin c, folate and potassium… Though it may not have much, they are still extremely beneficial, so drink up!

3. Ginger- Oh ginger how I love thee. I could literally write a ginger healing novel right now but I’ll save you the eye strain and get to the chase. Basically ginger is amazing for digestion, relieves nausea and motion sickness, helps prevent certain types of cancer, can help treat bloating and pain.

*If you’re pregnant or taking medication consult your doctor before taking ginger. Though I’ve read women who are pregnant and suffering from nausea can take bits of ginger, but not for longer than 3 days at a time. If you are taking medication ginger could possibly interact with your meds. Always consult your doctor before changing your lifestyle*

Good Bye Holiday food, Hello Juicing!

Happy 2014 Everyone! I am so happy you stopped by to check out my post on juicing. I hope everyone had a fun and safe New years Eve/ New years Day.

I have a health Blog because I love learning and sharing anything that has to do with health, BUT I am a huge Foodie. I love to eat, anything and everything. Unfortunately I can’t have numerous of different ingredients, but when I find something I can indulge in, boy do I indulge.

Thankfully It’s possible to make sweet treats with, I guess we can use the word, “special” ingredients. So let me tell you, I have eaten sugar Galore these last two months. I have been eating basically anything and everything that doesn’t contain Dairy, Soy or Wheat. You’d think there isn’t much, but now a days there’s a ton. I really had my fair share of Holiday treats, so Now time to Cleanse. How do we Cleanse? We juice! 

Okay so the best way to juice is to make it at home, but who in the world has the time to juice every day now a days? Not many of us, so next best thing is to buy them already made. Thankfully there are many companies that will do this for you, and some actually affordable. I want to introduce you to two of my favorite brands.

The First Brand is Suja Juice ( <– Go ahead click, learn more and order!) … Or stay on my page and learn here. Whichever works. Suja is one of my favorite juicing lines for numerous reasons, but one reason is that they are 100% Organic. Can it get any better than that? Yes it can. They are also Cold pressed and Non GMO. The founders of the company are passionate about health and insuring that their customers receive the best juice possible. You can order these, or find them in your local whole Foods store. Suja even has a cleanse guideline to get the most out of juicing.

The second brand I love is Evolution Fresh Juices. They have many different flavors and even sizes, they even come in 64 OZ sizes. You can find some of their Juices organic ( those are my favorite) and they come cold pressed as well to retain as many nutrients as possible. You can find these in your local whole foods store, or I’ve heard Vons carries them, as well as Costco.

Here are some things to Remember while Juicing to cleanse. Avoid Solids, giving your body a break on digesting fiber is extremely beneficial. Juicing (since its liquid) will hit the system much quicker. Try and intake more veggies than fruits, but don’t deprive yourself. The first 1-3 days will probably be the hardest, It’s ok, keep going you can do it! If you’re not usually a Clean eating person or a familiar juicer, start with a 3 day cleanse and go up from there. Drink lots of water! and just remember why you’re cleansing, to try and rid your body of nasty toxins. Drink as much juice as you’d like and try to stick to organic Fruits and Veggies as much as possible.

Holistic Home-made Dog Food

Hey everyone! Hope you all had a wonderful weekend. I had a pretty amazing weekend. The little things make me extremely happy like taking my dog to the park, watching him play at doggy day care and having dates with him at Starbucks. I know, I know I sound as if i’m the cat lady, but with her dog. Well heres some news, I probably am. When you love someone or something with every ounce of your heart, wouldn’t you want to spend as much time with them as possible? We all know that animals lives are short. If you knew you only had the next 7-13 years with the one you love, I’m sure you would spend as much time with them, so I do with my fur ball. I grew up an only child with a single mom, my only companion in life was my dog chevy.I had her for almost 17 years. When she passed away, I was devastated. I’ll never forget standing there with my mom and boyfriend ( at the time) and almost passing out in their arms. From that moment on, I vowed to always love animals with every piece of me and because of her I try and treat my current dog the absolute best I can. 

We fed chevy regular dog food, clueless about dog food, we didn’t know how dangerous it could/can be. It’s  important for people to eat healthy to prevent diseases and it’s equally as important for dogs for the same thing. Dogs are beautiful creatures. They can sustain an enormous amount of pain and still manage to wag their tail when they see you.  Why would you want anyone , animal or person, to suffer any kind of pain ever? I sure don’t. I’m not a veterinarian, but I love my dog enough to have taken holistic dog classes as well as have read numerous amount of books on dog health. 

I cook for my dog every single day, unless I prepare food in advanced so all I have to do is heat up. 

Dogs are easy. They are able to produce many of their own vitamins, they digest many foods easily and they’ll eat anything they think you are eating. Where it gets a tiny bit difficult, is that there are many foods that their bodies wont digest and therefor can cause life threatening issues. 

I add vitamins in his food that I get from whole foods. 

The picture above shows a meal that I made in advanced for Romeo, that lasted me about a week. It has Organic quinoa mixed with organic brown rice, Organic carrots, Organic zucchini, Organic Kale, with chopped up plain organic chicken. After I heat up about 1/2 cup I add his vitamins with Fish oil and Olive oil and he loves it! 

I keep his food in a tight lid glass container to keep his food as fresh as possible. 

If your dog is on dog food and you’re thinking of switching him/her to home cooked meals don’t so it all at once, you can really mess up their stomachs. Slowly add a little home cooked meal to his dog food, and every day add a little more until the dog food is completely gone. 

Yes, this is time consuming, but its worth it. My dog is almost 6 years old and has always been healthy. There hasn’t been anything to make me question if this is the right choice for him. It is.
